Gernot Rohr slams NPFL, says ‘players are not good enough’

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has made it clear that players in the Nigeria Professional Football League are not good enough to play for his team.

Answering questions in an interview with, Rohr said he has better players in Europe and will continue to snub NPFL players.

“Because they are not good enough and because I have better ones, Rohr said.”

“There are so many good players in Europe. I have invited more than 20 local players since 2016. If they are good, sooner or later they all end up in Europe.”

Rohr, who signed a new two-and-a-half-year deal with the Nigerian Football Federation in May, also revealed that his future at the helm of affairs is linked to a successful Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in 2021.

“The qualification for the Africa Cup 2021 and the World Cup 2022 in Qatar are the goals now. Until after the World Cup, that is until December 31, 2022.

“It (my contract) is linked to a successful Africa Cup of Nations.”

Gernot Rohr has continued to snub outfield players from the NPFL in his team, a decision that will be strengthened by the troubles of the league itself.

Only goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa who plays for Heartland FC in the NPFL has been consistently invited to the Super Eagles squad as a backup since Rohr arrived Nigeria in 2015.

NPFL is in disarray following the vote by Football Club Owners Association and the League Management Company to cancel the 2019/20 season.

Clubs voted last week to end the current campaign. The decision is yet to be ratified by the NFF with some clubs kicking against the move.
