Gordon Hayward declines player option, becomes free agent

Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward has declined his $34.2 million player option for the 2020-21 season and is now a free agent.

Hayward, signed a four-year, $127.8 million contract with Boston Celtics in 2017 after playing the first seven year of his career in Utah.

In the 2019-20 season, Hayward averaged 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists as the Boston Celtics reached the Eastern conference finals.

In his first game in a Celtics uniform, Hayward suffered a gruesome leg injury that cost him his initial season with the team. He returned the following year to play in 72 games but only started in 18 as he worked his way back into form.

Some teams with cap space, including Atalanta Hawks, have been linked to Gordon Hayward recently. A sign-and -trade to another destination could also be among Hayward’s options.
