GOV. WIKE PRESEASON TOURNAMENT: Lobi Stars holds Akwa United

Lobi Stars of Makurdi played out a 1-1 draw with Akwa United on Sunday in the ongoing Governor Nyesom Wike Preseason Tournament at the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt.

Akwa United took the lead in the 34th minutes through Ndifreke Effiong’s superb free-kick and were on course for a second victory.

But Lobi Stars got a deserved equaliser late in the second half through Austine Ogunye who capitalised on Akwa United defender Austine Gbadebo’s slip to earn his side a point.

The Promise Keepers are still top of Group A on 4 points with a superior goal difference after two games, while Lobi Stars are second with the same 4 four points.

Speaking to journalists after the match, Lobi Stars Head Coach, Kabiru Dogo praised his team’s resilience and commitment against a strong Akwa United side.

“I believe that my team is improving everyday,” Dogo said. “The team that played the first match is quite different from the one that played today, I tried to introduce young players from the feeders team and I am happy they did well against this opponent.”

“Some of the players are playing for me for the first time, so it is a new environment for them, with time, they will understand my philosophy and know how I want them to play.

“Some of the players are joining the team newly like Onuwa, when you have such a player with his height, you have to play around him and play for the team. I like him (Onuwa) and I believe he will do well.”

Lobi Stars will hope to return to winning ways tomorrow against Cynosure FC following the draw with Akwa United. They won their first match against Rivers United on Saturday.

While Coach Kennedy Boboye of Akwa United rotated his squad against Lobi Stars and said he is happy to see his players do well together.

On playing three days in a row, the former Plateau United head coach pointed out that his team was fully aware of the hectic fixtures in this tournament and stressed they are ready to compete.

“Definitely, I told them before departing Uyo what to expect, that was why we played three different friendlies. The only worry is that we have one or two injuries, but we have good replacements.”

Akwa United defeated Cynosure FC 3-1 in their first match on Saturday before being held by Lobi Stars today (Sunday). They will face wounded lions Rivers United tomorrow (Monday), who are yet to register a point in this tournament by 4pm.
