Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes Odion Ighalo is tailor-made for the club and expects the Red Devils to offer him a permanent deal.
Speaking to talkSPORT via Daily Express, the former Bayern Munich man submits that Manchester United need Ighalo.
“I think he’s been a good fit for Man United and when you sign players you’ve got to get the right fit, it’s not always about getting the best name, it’s about getting the guy that you don’t have that you need.
“He was somebody that whoever signed him hats off to you, because he’s given them something different,” he added.
Ighalo’s future at Manchester United has been a subject of concern and controversy in recent weeks as he has just one week left before his loan deal expires.
With Marcus Rashford returning to full fitness and Chile star Alexis Sanchez due to return to Old Trafford, after a short loan spell at Inter Milan, the Red Devils have shown an unwillingness to extend Ighalo’s stay beyond the current campaign.
Hargreaves believes Ighalo can still fit into the seemingly star-studded Manchester United side and will be surprised if they let him go.
“Hopefully he stays but there’s the whole Sanchez situation when he comes back, Martial and Rashford, they are fit as well, Bruno [Fernandes] and [Paul] Pogba – you’ve got to get them all into a team, with Daniel James as well.
“So he’s been good, really good. I’m sure they’ll try, if it’s sensible, to keep him longer. I’d be surprised if he left.”
Ighalo’s contract with his parent club, Shanghai Shenhua ends in December 2021. The Chinese Super League side recently placed a £20m price tag on the Nigerian international and wants him to return to China before the start of the new season.
