In a historic moment for African football, both Morocco and Egypt have secured their places in the semi-finals of the men’s football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This marks the first time two African nations have reached this stage in Olympic football history.

Morocco Outclasses USA, Advances to Semis

On Friday, August 2, 2024, Morocco delivered a dominant performance at the Parc des Princes, defeating the USA 4-0 to advance to the semi-finals. The Moroccan team, backed by a passionate crowd, showcased their prowess as they overpowered their opponents.

Captain Achraf Hakimi was instrumental in Morocco’s success, scoring one of the goals in a match where Soufiane Rahimi, Ilias Akhomach, and Mehdi Maouhoub also found the net. Rahimi opened the scoring with a penalty, followed by Akhomach and Hakimi adding further goals in the second half. Maouhoub sealed the victory with another penalty in stoppage time after a VAR review.

Morocco’s victory follows an impressive group stage performance where they topped their group ahead of Argentina. They will face either Japan or Spain in the semi-finals, scheduled for Monday in Marseille.

Egypt Triumphs Over Paraguay in Penalty Shootout

In a dramatic quarter-final clash, Egypt edged out Paraguay 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 1-1 draw in normal time. Ibrahim Adel was the hero for Egypt, scoring the equalizer in the 87th minute and converting the winning penalty in the shootout.

Diego Gómez had given Paraguay the lead with a well-placed shot in the 71st minute, but Adel’s late header from Zizi’s cross forced the match into extra time. The extra period was marked by exhaustion on both sides, and the game was ultimately decided by penalties. Egypt’s goalkeeper, Hamza Alaa, made a crucial save, and Adel’s successful spot-kick ensured Egypt’s progression to the semi-finals.

Egypt will face hosts France in their semi-final match, also scheduled for Monday in Lyon. Morocco will compete against Spain in the other semi-final.
