Benue State-based Honey Badgers made history on Sunday, September 8, 2024, by securing their first-ever promotion to the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership. They achieved this remarkable feat with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Pelican Stars in the NWFL Championship playoff match at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

The decisive moment came in the second half when Hellen Daniel found the back of the net, propelling the Honey Badgers to a historic win. Despite a spirited effort from Pelican Stars, the Badgers’ defense held strong to preserve their narrow lead.

Coach Emmanuel Agbo of Honey Badgers expressed his joy after the match, stating, “This is a dream come true for us. We’ve worked tirelessly to reach this point, and it’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our players and staff.”

Ibom Angels Return to the Top Flight

Meanwhile, Ibom Angels secured their return to the NWFL Premiership with a commanding 2-0 victory over Osun Babes. The Uyo-based team, led by former Super Falcons coach Edwin Okon, sealed their promotion thanks to goals from captain Abasiofon Uwah and Ijeoma Onweagba. The win marked a triumphant return for the “Orange Ladies,” who dominated the NWFL Championship with a perfect record.

Captain Uwah expressed her delight, saying, “We’re delighted to be back in the Premiership. It’s been a tough journey, but we’ve persevered and achieved our goal.”

Chosen Generation Angels and Heroes Queens Retain NWFL Status

In other playoff action, Chosen Generation Angels and Heroes Queens secured their places in the NWFL Championship for another season. Chosen Generation Angels narrowly defeated Kaduna Queens 1-0, while Heroes Queens beat DreamStar FC Ladies by the same scoreline. As a result, Kaduna Queens and DreamStar FC Ladies were relegated to the third tier of Nigerian women’s football.

NWFL Chairman Commends Teams

NWFL Chairman Nkechi Obi congratulated Honey Badgers and Ibom Angels on their promotions to the elite league, highlighting their dedication and resilience. She also praised Osun Babes and Pelican Stars for their competitive performances throughout the playoffs.
