I want to become Napoli legend like Maradona – Osimhen

Osimhen completes Napoli move

Napoli record signing Victor Osimhen says he wants to emulate great strikers like Diego Maradona, Gonzalo Higuain and Edinson Cavani as he looks to make his name in Italy.

The 21-year old joined Napoli from Lille on a five-year contract €81m deal including bonuses, with an option of a further year.

The Super Eagles striker becomes the most expensive African footballer ahead of Arsenal and Ivory Coast winger Nicolas Pepe.

Maradona inspired Napoli to two Italian championships in the 1986/87 and 1989/90 seasons, while Higuain and Cavani etched their names in the folklore of Napoli with their goalscoring heroics.

In an interview with Sport1, Osimhen said: “I am proud to join a club, who have seen great players like Maradona, Higuain and Cavani.

“I also want to go into the club’s history.

“I want to have a good Serie A and also help the club in the Europa League.”

Osimhen joined Lille from Belgium’s Charleroi as a replacement for Pepe and scored 18 goals in all competitions last season.

He was named as Lille’s player of the season and was also named in Ligue 1’s team of the season.

Osimhen burst into the spotlight at the 2015 Under-17 World Cup in Chile, as he clinched the Golden Boot and Silver Ball awards while steering the Golden Eaglets to the title.
