Slavia Prague defender Igoh Ogbu has reportedly been handed his first-ever call-up to the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.
According to ScoreNigeria, Ogbu is expected to replace West Bromwich Albion’s Semi Ajayi, who is currently side-lined with an injury sustained during training last month. If confirmed, this call-up would reward Ogbu for his impressive form in Europe, where he has become one of Nigeria’s most consistent and reliable defenders in recent seasons.
The 25-year-old has been a key player in Slavia Prague’s defense, helping the Czech giants secure a commanding 13-point lead at the top of the Czech First League as they pursue their eighth league title.
Ogbu hopes to get his Super Eagles chance after series of consistent performances with Slavia Prague.
Ogbu has featured in 18 league matches this season, scoring once and playing a central role in maintaining the team’s solid defensive record.

With experience in high-level competitions, including Champions League qualifiers and the Europa League group stages, Ogbu has proven his worth. His success since joining Slavia Prague in January 2023 has solidified his reputation as one of the top defenders in the Czech league.
A Strong Foundation in International Experience
Ogbu’s rise to prominence began with the Nigeria U-20 team, where he represented his country in the 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and the FIFA U-20 World Cup, making seven appearances in both tournaments.

After moving to Norway, he played for several clubs, including Rosenborg, Levanger, Sogndal, and Lillestrøm, before sealing a move to Slavia Prague.
Patience and Persistence Pay Off
Although Ogbu’s call-up to the Super Eagles team has been long awaited, he has remained patient, confident that his time would eventually come. In a previous interview, he expressed his calm approach:
“I’m not in a haste. I just believe in what I can do, and I have to wait. Other Nigerians are playing, and other players are there as well,” Ogbu said. “It will always come to be your time if you keep working hard and improving your game. It will happen in God’s timing.”
If confirmed, Ogbu’s inclusion in the Super Eagles squad would add depth to coach Eric Chelle’s defensive options. With his growing reputation in Europe, Ogbu is expected to compete with the likes of Calvin Bassey and captain William Troost-Ekong for a place in the heart of Nigeria’s defense.
