Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has confirmed teenage sensation Gabriel Martinelli has damaged his knee following a collision with a teammate in training.

The young Brazilian join Arsenal’s long list of injured players of Bernd Leno, Granit Xhaka, Pablo Mari, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Cedric Soares, Lucas Torreira and Callum Chambers.

It is reported the 18-year-old clashed knees with a teammate and could have suffered meniscus damage.

While the full extent of the problem is yet to be confirmed, Martinelli will be out for at least a month, which means he will miss the remainder of the season for the struggling Gunners.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Southampton, Arteta revealed Martinelli will not be involved in the coming fixtures.

“We had some really bad news yesterday. In training in the last action, he (Martinelli) got hit by another player. He has damaged his knee.

“The doctors are assessing the extent of the injury but it’s not looking good at all. We don’t know (how long) but it’s looking like months.

“Two players bang [into] each other [in Martinelli’s case], what happened with Pablo [Mari’s injury] on his own and a lot of others we’ve had recently are not muscular injuries, they are more traumatic injuries.

“Again, we’ve been really unlucky and we have to deal with it.”

Arteta also revealed that goalkeeper Bernd Leno who was injured on Saturday against Brighton will only be out for six weeks with a moderate ligament strain, while defender Pablo Mari will not play for the rest of the campaign and will return in two or three months.

“We thought it was going to a more significant injury, we don’t know the full extent of the injury still but we do know that the cruciate ligaments are not damaged – it was the biggest fear at the start.”

Granit Xhaka who also was injured last week against Manchester City and Sokratis are back and available for selection.

Meanwhile, Arteta has urged Arsenal hierarchy to give David Luiz a one year extension on his contract which is due to expire at the end of June.
