Nigerian-born New Zealand mixed martial artist, Israel Adesanya, arrived in Lagos on Thursday, August 22, 2024, with his parents, following his defeat to South African Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 305.
The middleweight title fight saw Du Plessis force Adesanya to submit in the fourth round, retaining his title and earning the opportunity to defend it next in South Africa.

Adesanya’s return to Nigeria was met with a warm welcome from fans at the Lagos airport. A group of local drummers performed Yoruba music to receive the fighter, who refers to himself as “Omo Oba,” meaning the king’s son or prince. The welcoming crowd showed their support and admiration for Adesanya despite his recent loss.

The UFC 305 fight was preceded by a press conference where Du Plessis taunted Adesanya’s heritage.

Adesanya, in the company of his parents were greeted to a warm welcome at the Lagos International airport.
