Former England striker Gary Lineker has heaped praise on Alex Iwobi for his exceptional performances for Fulham this season. The Nigerian midfielder has been instrumental in Marco Silva’s side, helping the Cottagers achieve one of their best starts to a Premier League campaign in years.
Iwobi, 28, has already equaled his personal best Premier League goal tally of five, with nearly half the season still to play. He has also registered three assists, emphasizing his importance to Fulham’s ambitions of securing European football.
Currently sitting eighth in the table, Fulham are just three points shy of a Europa League spot—a remarkable turnaround for a club that hasn’t finished higher than 10th since the 2011-12 season.
Speaking on his podcast The Rest is Football, Lineker commended Iwobi’s impact. “Iwobi has had a terrific season. He’s a bit of a journeyman around the Premier League,” said the former Barcelona and Tottenham forward.
Iwobi’s transformation under Silva has been striking. Once considered inconsistent during his time at Everton, he has found a new level of consistency and confidence at Craven Cottage.

Ironically, it was Silva who signed Iwobi for Everton in 2019 for £28 million—a transfer that was Silva’s final act as Everton manager. While Iwobi’s time at Goodison Park was initially underwhelming, he showed flashes of brilliance in his latter days with the club, contributing nine goal involvements under Frank Lampard and Sean Dyche.

Since joining Fulham, Iwobi has thrived, with his return to Goodison Park in October ending in a 1-1 draw. The Nigerian international scored a superb opener for Fulham in that match but opted not to celebrate, showing respect for his former club.
