Julius Aghahowa names one attribute current crop of Super Eagles strikers lack

Julius Aghahowa was one of the most dreaded Nigerian strikers of his generation. His acrobatic goal celebrations made him even more renowned.

Aghahowa famously scored the Super Eagles of Nigeria only at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan.

After Nigeria’s wobbling outing during the June international window, the former Shakhtar Donetsk goal poacher has named one attribute the current crop of Super Eagles strikers lack.

Former Nigeria International Julius Efosa Aghahowa says that the Super Eagles require off-ball strikers.

Aghahowa, a former Wigan Athletic forward made the statement during a chat with Brila FM radio on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

He said of the Eagles attack: “Everybody wants to get the ball at their feet, nobody is trying to take those runs that, even if you don’t get the ball, you come back and try again.

“We need strikers who will make those runs behind defenders and also players who can pick out that kind of players and deliver the ball”, Aghahowa remarked.

With Victor Osimhen ruled out with injury, then Super Eagles coach, Finidi George trusted Paul Onuachu and Terem Moffi to lead the Nigeria National team attack against South Africa and Benin Republic.

In both games, Nigeria’s goals were scored by midfielders as the attackers failed to soar, contributing to a point from six.

Finidi George paid the ultimate price for the poor outing, following his decision to step down as head coach after two games.
