Transfer Gist

Lille Director confirms Osimhen will join Napoli

Victor Osimhen to Napoli

Lille General Director, Marc Ingla has confirmed star striker Victor Osimhen is on the verge of joining Serie A giants Napoli.

Osimhen has been heavily linked with a move to Napoli following an impressive first season in the French Ligue 1, scoring 18 times for Lille.

The explosive forward joined Lille last summer from Belgian club Royal Charleroi and became an instant hit for the Stade Pierre-Mauroy outfit.

The 21-year old will earn seven times more than what he currently earns at Lille if the deal is successful.

Ingla confirmed during the unveiling of Isaac Lihadj that Osimhen’s transfer to Napoli has reached the final stage of completion.

“We are in the last stage [of discussions]. The player has made his choice. It is a regret to see him leave but we must be aware of the strength of the market,” Ingla told Goal.

“We do not hide our economic model. We must not only consider the amount of the transfer but also the salary that is offered to the player.

“We are not a final destination. With us, players thrive. We use their talent but we also build their careers. We are also in this process. It is the life of a club and the market. For him and his family, this can be an exceptional opportunity.”

Last month, the Super Eagles striker was spotted alongside his agent in Naples and is expected to sign a five-year deal worth over €70 million.

Yesterday, The Athletic NG reportedly that the forward has parted ways with his agent, Jean-Gerard Benoit Czajika/Didier Frenay over the representative’s selfishness to his proposed move to Napoli.

Osimhen will become Nigeria’s most expensive footballer of all time if the proposed €70m pulls through and he will become the second most expensive African footballer behind Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe (£72 million) and Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez (£60 million).

Former Arsenal man Alex Iwobi holds the record transfer fee of any Nigerian player following his move to Everton last summer which reportedly cost the Toffees £40 million.
