Mbaoma Chijioke overtakes Sikiru Alimi in NPFL goalscoring race

Chijioke Mbaoma - NPFL top scorer

Remo Stars striker Sikiru Alimi has been overtaken at the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) goalscoring charts by Enyimba FC star, Mbaoma Chijioke, who is drawing comparisons to Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.

Alimi’s Lead Surpassed

Remo Stars’ frontman Alimi had been the leading scorer in Nigeria’s top flight with 14 goals this season. However, the veteran was surpassed by the 21-year-old Mbaoma, whose impressive form over the weekend saw him score twice in Enyimba FC’s 4-1 victory over Rivers United in Aba. These goals brought Mbaoma’s season tally to 15, one more than Alimi, positioning him as the frontrunner for the NPFL Golden Boot.

Comparisons to Cole Palmer

Mbaoma’s goal-scoring exploits have led to comparisons with Chelsea starlet Cole Palmer, who netted 22 times in the Premier League this season. While Mbaoma’s 15 goals include seven penalties, Palmer’s tally features two goals fewer from the spot. Alimi, on the other hand, has scored four penalties for his title-chasing Remo Stars side.

Intense Battle for Top Scorer

With only four rounds of fixtures remaining, the battle for the NPFL’s top scorer award is as intense as the title race itself. The question remains whether Mbaoma can maintain his lead and cement his status as the league’s premier striker or if Alimi will reclaim the top spot.

What’s Next?

Fans and analysts alike are keenly watching to see if Mbaoma can hold off Alimi’s challenge in the final stretch of the season. As both players continue to vie for the coveted Golden Boot, their performances will be crucial in determining the league’s top scorer and also how well their club’s end the 2023/2024 season.
