Mesut Ozil offers to pay Arsenal mascot Gunnersaurus' full salary

Out of favour Arsenal midfielder, Mesut Ozil has offered to pay Gunnersaurus’ wages after seeing the mascot left the club after 27 years of his service.

Jerry Quy was relieved of his mascot duties at Emirates Stadium at the start of the week, with the club deciding that his services were no longer required in the absence of supporters.

Quy became a much-loved figure at Arsenal after donning the famous dinosaur suit in 1993, three years before the arrival of legendary manager Arsene Wenger.

Gunnersaurus was on the touchline during a golden era for the club which saw the team win three Premier League titles, but has now become the latest victim of cost-cutting measures amid the financial uncertainty of the coronavirus crisis.

The mercurial Ozil has now issued his own response, taking to social media to offer Gunnersaurus financial help on Tuesday.

“I was so sad that Jerry Quy aka our famous & loyal mascot Gunnersaurus and integral part of our club was being made redundant after 27 years,” Ozil wrote on Twitter.

“As such, I’m offering to reimburse Arsenal with the full salary of our big green guy as long as I will be an Arsenal player.”

Ozil is the club’s highest earner, currently taking £350,000-a-week and his contract is set to expire in June 2021.

The big green dinosaur had been a permanent fixture at home games since 1993, but has been let go as the role is deemed no longer necessary.

Jerry Quy, who played the role of Gunnersauraus, is hugely popular at Arsenal having also been involved in the Junior Gunners and Travel Club.

Fans even set up a GoFundMe page to save him from extinction.
