Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has cast doubt on Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s ability to lead the club to a Premier League title. While acknowledging the Spaniard’s progress, Mikel insists that competing is not enough—Arsenal must start winning major trophies.
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel praised Arteta for turning Arsenal into title contenders but questioned whether he has what it takes to take them to the next level.
“Has he improved Arsenal? Absolutely. But can he actually win the Premier League or the Champions League? I don’t think so,” Mikel stated. “It’s been over 20 years since Arsenal last won the league. Competing isn’t enough—they have to win.”

This view aligns with concerns from other football analysts, including former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, who has criticized Arsenal’s mentality and Arteta’s leadership. Many believe the Gunners lack a prolific striker and the mental toughness required to clinch the title.
