Former Bendel Insurance head coach Monday Odigie has entered the race to become Akwa United’s new manager following the resignation of Mohammed Babaganaru earlier this month.

Odigie was spotted in Uyo on Friday, where he reportedly held discussions with the management of the Promise Keepers. The Akwa United hierarchy, led by Chairman Elder Paul Bassey, is said to be keeping an open mind as they deliberate on their next head coach, a decision that carries significant weight given recent managerial challenges.

Akwa United has faced scrutiny over their coaching appointments since the departure of Kennedy Boboye in 2022. Babaganaru’s resignation added to the turmoil, leaving the 2021 NPFL champions searching for a leader to steer them back to prominence.

Earlier in the week, the club was linked with a potential return of former coach Kennedy Boboye. However, Odigie’s availability has introduced a compelling alternative. The tactician left Bendel Insurance in November, where he had a successful stint, earning recognition for his modern approach and tactical ingenuity.

The Promise keepers are emmeshed in the relegation battle as they stay 18th place with 19 points after Nigeria Premier football league Match Day 18, they next face Table toppers Remo Stars in Ikenne on week 19.

Odigie’s potential appointment signals a fresh option for Akwa United, the federation cup winner is known for his ability to develop talent, defensive set up and strict discipline culture, he could provide the Promise Keepers with the fresh start they need.

The ball is now in Akwa United’s court as they weigh their options. Will they opt for the familiarity of Boboye or take a chance on the dynamic vision that Odigie brings to the table? A decision is expected soon, as the club looks to stabilize and prepare for the challenges ahead.
