My mum tried to stop me from playing football – Orji Maduka

Nasarawa United forward Orji Maduka has revealed that his mother tried to stop him from playing football when he was in school.

Speaking to 9ja Sports Gladiators and monitored by The Athletic NG on Thursday, May 21, the striker says everything changed after he received an invitation for a trial in South Africa.

“My mum tried a lot to stop me from playing football,” Maduka said. “I was still in school, ND 2 finals in IMT, she tried all she could but I said this was a great opportunity for me then I left.

“When I went to Malta, I read a course in English and proceeded to Business Management being one of the requirements to stay in the country as a teenager, but my father encouraged me, ” he said.

Maduka signed his first professional contract with Yenibogazici DSK in Cyprus before moving to Malta with Hamrun Spartans FC in 2015. In 2017, he joined Portuguese third division team, Depertivo Frerences and returned to the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, with Wiki Tourist in 2018 before signing for Nasarawa United.

Orji Maduka says matches in the NPFL not shown on TV devalue players and hopes the contract with Next TV will come to fruition.

“The league not being on TV devalues the players, people are not seeing what we are doing, if you try to sign for a team abroad, they will ask questions because they don’t know you. If a club needs a particular player, they will have to watch the player week in week out from anywhere they are if the league is on TV and make a decision.

“It’s having a very bad effect on our football and we hope the contract signed (Next TV) will work out so that we have the league on TV.
