Premier League

Super Eagles trio of Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Kelechi Iheanacho will soon return to action the English Premier League season set to restart on 17 June with Aston Villa vs Sheffield United and Manchester City vs Arsenal, The Athletic NG has learned.

The matches are the two games in hand with the full fixtures list to be played on the weekend of 19-21 June.

The Premier League clubs are still discussing the idea at a meeting on Thursday, but it is understood all have agreed in principle at this stage.

All remaining 92 fixtures will be played behind closed doors.

Professional football in England was suspended on March 13 because of the coronavirus pandemic and June 17 will make it exactly 100 days since Leicester city beat Aston Villa 4-0 on March 9 in the last league fixture before play was suspended.

According to BBC Sport, clubs have agreed to a provisional end date of Saturday, 25 July, which means that the remainder of the season requires six weekends and three midweek round of matches.

Liverpool could clinch the title in their first game back if Arsenal beat second-placed Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich City are in the relegation places and will be fighting to beat the drop.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said supporters will watch matches at home, adding that safety requirements will be met before the confirmation of resumption date.

“The Premier League and our clubs are proud to have incredibly passionate and loyal supporters.”

“It is important to ensure as many people as possible can watch the matches at home.”
