Former Abia Warriors striker Ndifreke Effiong scored twice to give Akwa United their first win in the 2020/21 Nigeria Professional Football League at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
Effiong opened the scoring inside the first 5 minutes with a simple finish from Morice Chukwu’s free kick which was met by Olisa Ndah in the box.
A floury of early chances for the home side but it was Abia Warriors who scored the equalizer in the 26th minute through Harrison Ibukun.
Nzube Anaezemba had a fine volley which was pushed behind by goalkeeper Jean Efala and Ibukun scored from the corner after he was left unmarked.
Effiong scored from the spot in 58th minute after goalkeeper Vincent Edafe fouled substitute Wisdom Fernando and the striker made no mistake.
Effiong hit the woodwork twice in the game while Abia Warriors had a late chance in the 90th minute through Kingsley Dennis but his short hit the bottom corner of the bar.
Akwa United Head Coach, Kennedy Boboye said he is relief after his team secured their first victory of the season.
“It was a tough match for both sides but I thank God we won. We played very well today.”
