The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is on the brink of unveiling the new head coach for the Super Eagles, concluding a prolonged quest to fill the vacancy left by Jose Peseiro.
After deliberating over whether to adhere to tradition by hiring a foreign coach or opt for a homegrown talent, the NFF’s technical committee has leaned towards a European coach. Among the shortlisted candidates are former Manchester City assistant manager Domenec Torrent and current Fortuna Sittard boss Danny Buijs.
However, recent developments, including the Sports Ministry’s stance on foreign coach salary payments, may sway the decision towards a former international player to lead the Super Eagles.
This shift in approach has propelled former Barcelona winger Emmanuel Amunike and ex-Ajax Amsterdam ace George Finidi to the forefront of the race. Initial indications suggest that Amunike holds the edge, with an official announcement expected within 48 hours.

Preparations are already underway, with the NFF reportedly having a contract prepared for the incoming head coach, according to Owngoal Nigeria. The contract is slated to span two years, with a salary package below $50,000.
The appointed coach will bear the responsibility of steering the three-time African champions towards qualification for the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Notably, there will be a stipulation in the contract requiring the coach to guide the Super Eagles to at least the semifinals of the upcoming AFCON.
