Nigeria drop one spot in latest FIFA ranking

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman

Despite enduring a winless run under former coach Finidi George, the Super Eagles have managed to remain in the top 40 teams in world football.

In the latest FIFA rankings, Nigeria’s national team is ranked 39th globally, a drop of one place from their previous position, but they continue to hold a strong position in African football.

Following Finidi George’s resignation, the Super Eagles are currently without a manager. However, they remain ahead of teams like Cameroon, Ghana, South Africa, and Norway, where superstar Erling Haaland plays. Nigeria’s drop in the rankings is attributed to their recent World Cup qualifiers, where they drew 1-1 with South Africa and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic.

On the continental stage, Morocco leads as the top-ranked African team, holding the 14th spot globally after their historic semi-final run in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Senegal follows as the second highest-ranked African team at 19th in the world. Egypt, ranked 36th, and Ivory Coast, at 38th, also feature prominently.

Despite their recent challenges, Nigeria remains in the top five, ranking 39th. Completing the top ten in Africa are Tunisia (41), Algeria (46), Cameroon (51), Mali (53), and South Africa (57).

On the global scene, Argentina retains the top spot after winning the 2024 Copa America, adding to their 2022 FIFA World Cup victory. France holds steady in second place, while Spain has moved up five places to third following their EURO 2024 victory. England, the runners-up in EURO 2024, now sit in fourth, and Brazil, after a disappointing Copa America campaign, complete the top five.
