Nigerian player quits Atalanta for another Italian club

Awua’s journey in Italian football began with high hopes, but despite stints at top clubs like Inter Milan, Crotone, and Spezia, he struggled to secure a permanent spot in the first teams. His latest move to SPAL represents a chance to rebuild his career after officially parting ways with Europa League holders Atalanta.

Born in Makurdi, Nigeria, Awua honed his skills at Football College Abuja before making the move to Italy during the 2016-2017 season.

Over the years, Theophilus Awua has gained valuable experience in the Italian third tier, Serie C, where he has made 128 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing three assists. His career also includes loan spells at various clubs, including Juve Stabia, Rende, Bari, Livorno, Cittadella, and Pro Vercelli.

The presentation of SPAL’s latest acquisition took place on Wednesday afternoon, with the club’s technical director, Alex Casella, in attendance. Awua is already familiar with some of his new teammates, having previously played alongside Antenucci at Bari, Rosafio at Cittadella, and Bachini at Juve Stabia.
