‘Not yet time for celebration’ – Eguma warn Rivers United players

Technical Adviser of Rivers United, Stanley Eguma has warned his players that it is too early in the season to start celebrating following a routine 3-0 victory on Sunday against Kwara United in Port Harcourt.

Two first-half goals from defender Ifeanyi Anaemena and midfielder Godwin Aguda and a 90th minute penalty by Chika Godwin ensured the Pride of Rivers maintain their 100 percent start to the 2020/21 Nigeria Professional Football League.

Rivers United have won all of their three matches this season, scoring five goals and conceding none and Eguma believes it’s a start of something new for the club and advise his players to remain committed and not get carried away.

“I commend my players, I thank God almighty too for a very good game and a victory in this game,” the gaffer said.

“I think we prepared well for this game because Kwara United having won their first game against Plateau United, they came with a lot of optimism, a lot of confidence so we didn’t relent. We had to work very hard so that we won’t be taken unawares.

“Today I thank my players for leaving up to expectation by scoring three goals. I think the league is still at its early stage, It is not yet time for celebration. We keep working very hard because we know that there are so many other teams that are very strong in the league. We will take them one after the other until we get to the promise land.”

Coach Eguma opted to retain places for Konan Ruffin, Fabian Nworie, Lookman Binuyo, Stephen Gopey, Fortune Omoniwari, and Bamba Bakari while Theophilus Afelokai, Kazie Enyinnaya, Ifeanyi Anaemena, Cletus Emotan and Godwin Aguda were recalled to the starting eleven.

The result takes Rivers United to top of the table with 9 points from 3 matches and will confront Wikki Tourist in Bauchi on Wednesday as the NPFL enters matchday four.
