The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) have taken a bold step to address growing concerns over indiscipline and safety breaches in the league.
Recently, the NPFL deducted points from Bendel Insurance and Plateau United due to serious infractions.
Bendel Insurance were deducted three points and three goals for failing to ensure adequate security during their match against Kano Pillars.
Unauthorised persons gained access to restricted areas, attacking match officials after the game. This egregious breach compromised the safety of officials and players.

Similarly, Plateau United suffered a similar fate, losing three points and three goals for failing to provide adequate security.
Their supporters attacked match officials and the visiting team, Rangers International, and threw objects onto the field, injuring an official.
The NPFL’s decisive action demonstrates its commitment to maintaining discipline and ensuring player and official safety. The league’s frameworks and rules clearly outline club responsibilities, security protocols, and supporter conduct expectations.
The NPFL cited failure to provide adequate security, supporters’ misconduct, and breach of league rules and frameworks as reasons for the points deduction.
The consequences are significant for both clubs. Bendel Insurance dropped to the bottom of the table with nine points, while Plateau United fell to 15th position with 12 points.
The NPFL’s swift action serves as a warning to other clubs: indiscipline and safety breaches will not be tolerated.
To prevent similar incidents, NPFL clubs must strengthen security measures, ensure proper supporter conduct, and adhere to league rules and frameworks.
By addressing indiscipline and prioritising safety, the NPFL can enhance the reputation of Nigerian football and create a more secure environment for players, officials, and fans.
The NPFL’s commitment to discipline and safety is crucial for the growth and development of Nigerian football. As the league continues to promote fair play and sportsmanship, clubs must take responsibility for their actions and ensure a safe and respectful environment for all stakeholders.
