NPFL wrap: Abia Warriors suffers another defeat, Wikki Tourists end Rivers United unbeaten run

Abia Warriors continue their worst start to a season in the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, with a 1-3 home loss to Jigawa Golden Stars at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba on Wednesday.

Under pressure manager Imama Amapakabo’s side have lost all four matches of the 2020/21 NPFL season, scoring just two (2) goals and conceding seven (7).

The Umuahia Warlords were favourite to win Jigawa Golden Stars and took the lead early in the match when Utibe Archibong headed home Nzube Anaezemba’s cross on 6th minute.

Olasukanmi Quadiri equalised for the visitors in the 23rd minute. Anaezemba won a penalty in the second half but Fatai Abdullahi missed from the spot in the 53rd minute before Stone Samuel’s double on 74th and 85th minute secured Stars first away victory against Abia Warriors.

Rivers United’s winning streak came to an end in Bauchi with a 1-0 defeat to Wikki Tourists. Chinedu Udeagha’s 30th minute freekick was enough to secure all three points for Wikki Tourists, but the Pride of Rivers remain top of the league table with 9 points.

Heartland got their first win of the season with a comfortable 2-0 victory against Enyimba in the Oriental Derby. Shedrack Oghali (33) and Emmanuel Adachie (53) were both on target to win the match for Heartland in Okigwe.

In Warri, three second-half goals from David Mark (58), Tega Ebetomame (74) and Uche Ihuarulam (81) secured Warri Wolves’ second victory of the season against Katsina United.

In Kano, veteran midfielder, Rabiu Ali scored from the spot in the 78th minute to secure all three points for Kano Pillars against Plateau United at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

At the Cathedral, Rangers secured their third straight victory against FC Ifeanyi Ubah to move second on the NPFL table. A first half penalty from Israel Abia (12) gave Rangers the lead before Ekene Awazie’s 51st minute equaliser just after the restart leveled the scores for the visitors. But Shedrack Asiegbu scored in the 57th minute to give Coach Salisu Yusuf another victory in the league.

In Akure, Sunshine Stars denied Lobi Stars an away victory in a thrilling 2-2 draw in the South West Derby. Fuad Ekelojuoti opened the scoring in the 9th minute before Samuel Mathias leveled just before the halftime whistle. Ossy Martins gave Lobi Stars the lead in the 77th minute but Sadeeq Yusuf equalised in the 92nd minute.

While MFM secured a point in Uyo against Dakkada FC. Solomon Chigozie scored a beautiful goal for the home side in first half added time before Temim Adebayo scored the equaliser in the 77th minute.

Akwa United also secured a point against Kwara United in Illorin with Christopher Nwanze scoring for the host in the 61st minute before scoring an own goal 7 minutes later when he deflected Ubong Friday’s effort into his own net.

While Adamawa United and Nasarawa United played out a 0-0 draw in Dutse.
