NPFL: Rivers, Plateau United extend lead at the top

Rivers United continue to showcase their impressive form after dogged Joseph Onoja scored a brace on Sunday to consolidate their title claim in a Matchday 17 game against Shooting Stars at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt. 

The Pride of Rivers who picked up a vital away win against Kano Pillars in mid-week took the lead at 8 minutes through Joseph Onaoja’s long-range strike, with the same later converting Denis Ndasi’s assist to earn Rivers United a comfortable 2:0 win against Shooting Stars.

Into the second half, intensity grew wild as the visitors tried to bounce back, only to have Rivers United shot topper Sochima Victor deny the Rasheed Balogun side a late comeback in the game.

The result keeps the Pride of Rivers on top of the log with 38 points from 17 games, while Shooting Stars slump to 9th position with 23 points. 

Plateau United 1-0 Katsina United 

Plateau United secured a hard-fought home win in Jos, as Ibrahim Buhari scored with a header at stoppage-time to help the Fidelis IIechukwu side to a 1-0 win over Katsina United. 

The Fidelis IIechukwu led side who are hopeful for top-spot sits second on the log with 37 points from 17 games, one point behind table-toppers Rivers United.

In other Matchday 17 games played, Enyimba International continue sulking in woes after suffering a 2-0 loss to Dakkada FC in Uyo.

Goals from Aniekan Ekpe who scored from the spot and another from Edidiong Ezekiel left the home fans feeling ecstatic at the signal of the final whistle. 

In Okigwe, Akwa United held Abia Warriors to a goalless draw, while Abubakar Aliyu’s first-half goal handed Wikki Tourists all three points against Eddy Dembraye’s Lobi stars in Bauchi. 

Similarly, Kano Pillars emerged victorious after goals from Mark Daniel and Ifeanyi Eze in the first half helped secure a comfortable 2-0 home win over Nasarawa United in Katsina.
