The highly anticipated Nigeria Premier League (NPL) Championship playoffs commenced with a thrilling start on Saturday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.
In the first match of the day, Enyimba International and Remo Stars showcased an intense battle, resulting in a dramatic 2-2 draw. The first half ended goalless, but the second half witnessed a surge of energy from both teams.
Enyimba’s Adiele Eriugo broke the deadlock in the 54th minute with a superb strike, courtesy of an exceptional individual effort by left-back Imo Obot. However, Remo Stars quickly responded as substitute Junior Lokosa found the back of the net with his first touch of the game, capitalizing on a cross from Philip Odubia in the 75th minute.
The game took another twist when Enyimba International was awarded a penalty after Remo Stars’ Junior Nduka brought down Chijioke Mbaoma inside the box. Chukwuemeka Obioma, the top scorer of the NPFL, confidently converted the spot kick in the 81st minute, putting Enyimba International in the lead once again.
However, in a dramatic late equalizer, Junior Nduka of Remo Stars delivered a sublime free kick, beating Enyimba International goalkeeper Djeri Bassa in the 94th minute, resulting in a 2-2 draw.
Enyimba International will face Lobi Stars in their next Matchday 2 clash, while Remo Stars will take on Rivers United on Monday.
In the second match of the day, Rivers United emerged victorious in a hard-fought encounter against Sunshine Stars, securing a 1-0 win. The only goal of the game came in the 62nd minute from the penalty spot, as Ebube Duru converted after Mark Gibson was fouled inside the box by a Sunshine Stars defender. The first half of the match witnessed a more defensive approach from both teams.
With this crucial victory, Rivers United claimed the top position on the tournament leaderboard, garnering three points. Conversely, Sunshine Stars slipped to the bottom of the standings after their defeat.
In the third match of the day, Lobi Stars and Bendel Insurance battled to a goalless draw. Bendel Insurance continued their impressive unbeaten streak in the NPFL, extending it to 19 games this season.
Lobi Stars will aim to improve their performance in the upcoming Matchday 2 clash against Enyimba International, while Bendel Insurance is set to take on Sunshine Stars on Monday.
