NWFL scraps 2019/20 season, adopts new format for next season

The Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL, has decided to scrap the 2019/20 season and adopt a new league format for the 2020/21 season, which is set to kick off once sporting events resumes in the country.

The decision was reached among others in a video conference on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, between NWFL Chairperson and Club Chairmen.

In a release by the media department of NWFL, Chairperson Aisha Falode in conjunction with club owners and managers unanimously agreed to scrap the 2019/20 season.

The decision is to protect the health of of players and officials in the three tiers of the women’s league in line with the COVID-19 protocols.

It was also agreed that clubs should prepare for the 2020/21 season, pending the resumption of sporting activities in the country.

The Athletic NG also understands that documents for next season has been submitted to the Ministry of Sports which has been handed over to the COVID-19 Taskforce committee, the National Assembly and Nigeria Football Federation.

Clubs are to use this period to complete all registration processes including evidence of up to date payment of salaries to their players.

In view of the approval of CAF to commence the CAF Women Champions
League in 2021, the 2020/21 Nigeria Women Premier League season will be structured in a full season format with a plan to organize.

The league leadership urged all clubs to display and give quality representation on the continent during the inaugural CAF Women Champions League.

Falode briefed the club chairmen and managers of FIFA COVID-19 Solidarity fund relief to the Confederation and national associations with specific reference to $500,000.00 USD to each association for women football development, noting that, it is the prerogative of the NFF to determine the breakdown.
