Nigerian striker Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, a finalist for the CAF Young Women’s Player of the Year award, has signed with NWSL side San Diego Wave FC.
The 19-year-old leaves Rivers Angels FC of the Nigerian Women’s Premier Football League Premiership in a transfer for an undisclosed fee.
After completing her medicals, P1 Visa, and International Transfer Certificate (ITC), Okwuchukwu will join San Diego’s 2025 roster under a one-year contract running through the upcoming season.

San Diego Wave FC Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton welcomed the talented forward, stating,

International Impact
Okwuchukwu joins the NWSL after a standout showing at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, where she scored twice and provided an assist in four games for Nigeria.

At just 16, she had already represented Nigeria in the 2022 U-20 World Cup in Costa Rica, helping the team reach the quarterfinals before losing to the Netherlands.

Her move to San Diego Wave FC adds another international slot to the team’s 2025 roster, continuing the trend of Nigerian talents moving to the NWSL.
