Onome Ebi: Foreign-based players would have qualified Super Falcons for Tokyo Olympics

Super Falcons defender Onome Ebi has revealed that the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games because of the absence of the foreign-based professionals.

Onome Ebi who spoke with Brila FM in an Instagram live session, believed the Super Falcons would have met better luck if the team had paraded the entire foreign base professionals.

“Definitely I think so because if all the professionals are called, I think we could have qualified, we have been playing together for a long time.”

Nigeria lost opportunity to feature at the Olympic games after playing out a 1-1 draw with their Ivorian counterparts at the Agege township in Lagos, after the first meeting ended in a stalemate in Abidjan.

The nine-time AWCON winners went into both ties in the wake of the departure of their Swedish coach, Thomas Dennerby and the team was left in the hands of Coach Christopher Danjuma on interim basis.

Coach Danjuma, however, invited seven overseas-based and 11 home-based players with key players like Uchenna Kanu, Anam Imo, Ini Umotong, all missing from the squad.

“It’s not easy for new players to just fit in just like that, we had about six new players, it’s not that easy to blend them together.”

“It is not easy just to bring in new players and blend them in just like that, it’s football, you have to train together for a long time in order to understand yourselves,” Ebi said.

“And I think if we had all the professionals, the coach will also have a lot of choices to make and we would have qualified,” she added.

Falcons previously played at 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics football events, but have now missed out on 2012, 2016 and 2020 Olympic tournaments.
