Super Falcons of Nigeria

The Super Falcons of Nigeria secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Cameroon, to move into the final qualifying round for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games women’s football event.

Entering the second leg of their 3rd qualifying round clash tied on aggregate after a goalless draw in the first leg at the Stade de la Reunification in Douala, Cameroon, on February 23, both teams were determined to secure a decisive result.

In a tense showdown at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a stellar performance, moving them one step closer to the prestigious 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum made a bold decision by opting to start reigning CAF Women’s Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, on the bench for this crucial match.

It took just 14 minutes for Nigeria to break the deadlock in Abuja, with Esther Okoronkwo capitalizing on a brilliant move orchestrated by Juventus star Echegini to put the Super Falcons ahead 1-0.

Despite creating numerous scoring opportunities, the Falcons were unable to further extend their lead against the resilient Indomitable Lionesses.

Cameroon ended the match with ten players following a stoppage-time red card, allowing the Falcons to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory and advance to the final qualifying round.

Under the guidance of coach Randy Waldrum, the Nigerian Falcons will now await the winner between South Africa and Tanzania in the final qualifying round scheduled for April 1-9, 2024.

With Africa allocated two slots for the Women’s Football event at the 2024 Paris Olympics Games, the competition remains fierce, with Ghana, Zambia, Morocco, and Tunisia also vying for qualification.
