Plateau United drops first points at home against Gombe United

Plateau United’s title chase suffered unlikely setback against Gombe United on Sunday when they failed to win at home for the first time this season.

Gombe United came from behind to steal a point thanks to Ibrahim Yahaya’s 70th minute goal to cancel out Andrew Ikefe’s header 10 minutes earlier.

The Highlanders had the chance to win the match with a 89th minute penalty after Nenrot Silas was fouled twice in the box, but the forward missed the spot kick.

Coach Fidelis Illechukwu had a perfect record in Jos, winning all 16 matches before the 1-1 draw with Gombe United, which is identical of the reverse fixture in Gombe State in February 2022.

Gombe United head Aliyu Zubairu was pleased with the point in a difficult ground.

“We had a rough game in our last home encounter where we drew; so we had a game plan to come and pick at least a point in Jos which we eventually achieved.”

“Plateau is not a push over and having studied them, we were able to stick to the match plan without losing concentration especially in the defence and always taking the fight to them upfront.”

Despite the draw, Plateau United maintained the second spot with ten points adrift of League leaders, Rivers United while Gombe United are 9th with 49 points.
