President Buhari appoints Amokachi Special Assistant on sports

Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed former Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi as his Special Assistant on Sports.

In a letter dated August 17th, 2020 and signed by the Secretary to the Federation Government Boss Mustapha, The Athletic NG understands that Amokachi will advise President Buhari on all sporting matters.

“I am pleased to inform you that Muhammadu Buhari, President of the  Federal  Republic of Nigeria has approved your appointment as Special Assistant on Sports,” the letter reads.

The appointment takes effect from the 11th of August, 2020.

The Former Everton of England player was earlier in the year named  Nigeria’s  Football Ambassador.  Although a ceremonial role, as Ambassador he is expected to mentor youngsters.

The role was to assist the federal ministry of youth and sports development to scout and mentor players in her quest to revive the development of football in the country.

Amokachi popular known as the ‘Bull’ started his playing career in the Nigerian league with former powerhouse Ranchers Bees Football club of Kaduna before moving to Europe.

Amokachi was a member of the 1994 Super Eagles squad that won Nigeria’s first African Nations Cup title in Tunisia.

After leaving Nigeria in 1990, the forward featured for Belgian side Club Brugge and Premier League club Everton. He also played for Besiktas in Turkey and Colorado Rapids in the USA.

Upon his retirement, Amokachi managed Nasarawa United and Enyimba. He also served as Nigeria’s assistant coach to Shuaibu Amodu and Stephen Keshi.
