Akwa United will be hoping to get their first victory in the NPFL and get the season underway against struggling Abia Warriors on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
Both teams have failed to register a victory in their opening two matches after Akwa United were held to goalless draw by Dakkada FC and last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Rangers in Enugu.
While Abia Warriors have lost both of their matches this season, a 1-0 lost to neighbours Enyimba on the opening fixture and also losing with the same scoreline to 10-man Rivers United in Aba.
United will be hoping to record their third home win against Abia Warriors since a 3-1 home win in February 2017.
Abia Warriors have had more wins (3) against Akwa United’s (2) with six of those encounters ending in a draw.
Last season, Akwa United were held to a goalless draw at home by Abia Warriors, with the Umuahia Warlords winning 2-1 in the corresponding fixture.
Akwa United are unbeaten at home in their last five league matches, their last defeat was a 0-2 defeat to Kwara United, courtesy of a brace from Alao Danbani on January 2020.
Abia Warriors have lost two (2) of their six (6) away matches to Akwa United with four (3) ending in a draw and one (1) win while United are yet to win an NPFL away game in their five (5) visits to Umuahia losing two (2) and drawing three (3)
Both teams have scored ten (10) goals each in their eleven (11) meetings in the NPFL since Abia Warriors gained promotion in 2015.
