Rangers extend unbeaten NPFL run with grip on top spot, Enyimba, Lobi hot on pursuit

Rangers International of Enugu continued their stranglehold on the top spot in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with a convincing 2-0 victory over Sunshine Stars.

The Flying Antelopes displayed their championship credentials as Kalu Nweke and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi found the back of the net to secure the three points and maintain their position at the summit of the league table. With 51 points from 28 matches, Rangers demonstrated why they are the team to beat this season.

Meanwhile, defending champions Enyimba laid down a marker of their own as they soared into second place with a resounding 5-0 triumph over Kano Pillars. Led by Super Eagles interim coach Finidi George, Enyimba put on a masterclass performance with goals from Joseph Atule, Chijoke Mbaoma, Eze Ekwutoziam, and Muyiwa Alade. The People’s Elephant now sit comfortably on 48 points with a game in hand, sending a clear message to their rivals that they are serious contenders for the title once again.

Lobi Stars maintained their pursuit of the top spot by settling for a 1-1 draw against Sporting Lagos. Despite Junior Lokosa giving the hosts the lead in the first half, Lobi Stars fought back and equalized through Samuel Tiza to earn a valuable point on the road. The result kept Lobi Stars in third place, ensuring they remain in the title race with a competitive edge.

Elsewhere, Doma United caused a stir by shocking host Akwa United with an early goal from Emmanuel Jesam, highlighting their resilience and determination on the pitch. Bayelsa United left it late to secure a crucial victory over Heartland, while Abia Warriors edged out Plateau United in a tight 1-0 contest. These results underscored the fierce competition and unpredictability in the NPFL, with teams fighting tooth and nail for every point as the season reaches its climax.

In the later kick-off games, Shooting Stars emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Kwara United, showcasing their attacking prowess and defensive stability. On the other hand, Bendel Insurance suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Niger Tornadoes, highlighting the unforgiving nature of the league and the high stakes involved in every match.
