Daniel Ogunmodede, the head coach of Remo Stars, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the remuneration of coaches in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
In an interview with Brila, the coach, popularly known as Ijaball, stated that the pay for coaches in the NPFL is “extremely not encouraging” and blamed it for the slow development of the league.
Ogunmodede, who has been in charge of Remo Stars since August 2022, pointed out the disparity in coaches’ salaries between Nigeria and Rwanda.

He noted that while coaches in Rwanda earn between $10,000 and $15,000, their counterparts in Nigeria receive less than a million naira, which is equivalent to less than $1,000.
The coach believes that the low pay for coaches is a significant reason why the NPFL has not developed as expected. He emphasized that coaches are expected to perform miracles with meager resources, which is not sustainable.
Ogunmodede also suggested that the league would benefit significantly if former Super Eagles players ventured into coaching, bringing their wealth of experience and expertise to the table.
Remo Stars had a decent outing in the maiden Naija Super 8 competition, reaching the final but losing to Sporting Lagos. Despite the team’s performance, Ogunmodede took responsibility for their results, showing his commitment to the team’s success.
The coach’s call for better remuneration for NPFL coaches is a timely one, as the league continues to struggle with development and growth. With experienced coaches like Finidi George, Oliseh, and Amuneke, the league could benefit from their expertise and knowledge, leading to improved performances and a more competitive league.
As the league continues to evolve, it is essential to recognize the importance of coaches’ roles in developing the game and provide them with the necessary resources to excel.
