Rohr is not the best option for Super Eagles – Abdu Maikaba

Plateau United Coach, Abdu Maikaba says Gernot Rohr is not the best manager for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, with the German tactician yet to decide if he will extend his stay as the national team coach.

In an exclusive interview with The Athletic NG, Maikaba says indigenous coaches will not be persuaded to watch matches in the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL in other to help nurture players.

The Kano born coach while appreciating Rohr for his efforts, said Nigerian coaches can do better.

“I don’t think Rohr is the best option for Nigeria. He has not done badly, but we expect more than that from him, that’s the truth.

“To me, if a Nigerian can be given a chance, he knows the mentality of Nigerians, he will be free to go everywhere in Nigeria to watch games and I believe it will work for us.

“When Keshi handled Super Eagles, he was able to discover some players for Super Eagles and we were able to win a major trophy in Africa which those players played vital roles in the Super Eagles team,” he said in an exclusive chat with The Athletic NG.

The former Akwa United gaffer also said there are more than enough quality players in the NPFL who can play for the Super Eagles if given the chance.

“To me as a coach in the NPFL for two decades, I think we have more than enough, we have the players to pitch into the Super Eagles setup but the most important thing is the encouragement.

“If the coach (Rohr) used to come and watch games of NPFL teams, the players will put more effort being that the coach is around and from there he will definitely notice that some of the players can pitch into the Super Eagles team.

“Not even to go into the first team, but you can make plans for players from the NPFL to go into the Super Eagles team maybe as reserves, understudy the players, get some good friendly games, give them chances, before you know it, some of these players will break-in.”

Maikaba further stated he has no problem if the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, decides to hand Rohr a contract extension, which he said clauses inserted in the new contract are very important.

“The league is the most important, our league is even more important than the national team. So if we have a good league, I believe we can raise a very good national team, it’s just a matter of time.”

Maikaba, who won the inaugural Aiteo Cup with Akwa United also revealed he has applied for the position of the National U20 coach, but is yet to hear from the NFF.
