Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze has shared the difficulties he faced while playing under former AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli.

Chukwueze joined AC Milan from Villarreal CF in the summer of 2023, ending his successful six-year stint in Spain. However, his transition to Serie A has been challenging. Despite his standout performances with Villarreal, where he was a key player, Chukwueze struggled to match that form in Milan. Under Pioli’s management, the Nigerian winger had just three assists and one goal in 24 appearances.

“I arrived late, at the end of July. It was a bit difficult to convince him; the player in my position was scoring goals. I had a good relationship with Pioli; he’s a fantastic guy and a great coach,” Chukwueze said.

Despite his efforts, Chukwueze found it hard to secure a regular starting spot, as Pioli often preferred Christian Pulisic in his position.

With the arrival of Paulo Fonseca as the new manager at San Siro, Chukwueze has seen a revival in his form. He credits Fonseca’s trust and clear communication for his renewed confidence.

“Fonseca has played a big role in my revival. He’s been in constant communication with me. He only told me one thing: ‘Samuel, I don’t want to see the Chukwueze from last year. I want the one from Villarreal.’ And I said, ‘Okay, no problem.’ It’s like I’ve been reborn; I’m a new player,” Chukwueze told La Gazzetta, as reported by Milan Post.

As the new season approaches, there is growing optimism that Chukwueze will rediscover his best form and make a significant impact for AC Milan, just as he did during his time at Villarreal.
