Sergio Ramos quits boyhood club Sevilla again

Veteran defender Sergio Ramos will not continue with his boyhood club Sevilla next season, ending his brief return to the La Liga side.

The 37-year-old, who rejoined Sevilla after 18 years away, mostly spent at Real Madrid followed by two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, will now be a free agent again, with expectations high for a move outside of Europe this time.

Ramos signed just after the start of the season, missing the transfer window cutoff. His return was contentious among fans, but overall, he managed to win over many at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, where thousands attended his presentation. On Tuesday, he will address the public about his decision in an official farewell event at 11:00 CEST.

During his stint, Ramos played a crucial role in Sevilla’s defensive efforts, helping steer them away from relegation trouble in the latter half of the season and scoring seven goals in 34 games.

There has been no indication of retirement plans from Ramos, with recent strong links pointing towards a potential move to San Diego FC in Major League Soccer. While Ramos has made peace with many fans, his season at the Sanchez Pizjuan was not without its challenges.

In their official announcement, Sevilla FC expressed gratitude for Ramos’ commitment, leadership, and dedication, wishing him the best for his future endeavors. Ramos is scheduled to bid farewell to the club’s fans in a press conference on Tuesday at 11:00 AM local time at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium, alongside club president Jose Maria del Nido Carrasco.

The club wrote on Monday, June 17: “Sergio Ramos has informed Sevilla FC that he will not continue next season with the Nervion club after having fulfilled his dream of returning to the club where he trained as a player and achieved full international status. Sergio Ramos played 37 games in the 23/24 season, with a total of 3,301 minutes and 7 goals to his credit.

“Sevilla FC would like to thank Sergio Ramos for the commitment, leadership and maximum dedication that he has shown in this campaign, wishing him the best of luck in his next professional challenge.

“Sergio Ramos will say goodbye publicly this Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the press room of the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, accompanied by the president, Jose Maria del Nido Carrasco.”
