After a remarkable turnaround in the second half of last season, Sunshine Stars are aiming high in the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League campaign. Coach Kennedy Boboye, a two-time NPFL winner, has set his sights on the title, and the team’s performance in the Governor Douye Diri Pre-Season tournament suggests they are on the right track.

Boboye, who returned to Sunshine Stars for a second stint last season, led the team to a 10th-place finish with 52 points, despite a stuttering start. The Owena Babes are now determined to go all the way and win the title.

In their opening match of the pre-season tournament, Sunshine Stars defeated hosts Bayelsa United 1-0, with new signing Ismail Ayodele scoring the only goal. Boboye was pleased with the win but emphasized that the team still has work to do.

“We will work on the areas where we observed we are not doing well. Our target is to win the league; nothing short of that,” Boboye said in his post-match interview. “We are not there yet; we are just a week in; by the time we stay together for two or three weeks, we will be better than what people are seeing here.”

Since their CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup campaigns between 2011 and 2012, Sunshine Stars have not enjoyed much success. However, with Boboye at the helm, the team is now poised to challenge for the title.

The coach’s experience and tactical acumen will be crucial in the upcoming season. He has already shown his ability to turn things around at Sunshine Stars, and the team’s fans will be hoping for a successful campaign.

With the NPFL season set to kick off soon, Sunshine Stars will be looking to build on their pre-season form and make a strong start to the campaign. If they can maintain their momentum, they could be genuine title contenders.
