Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has publicly backed Augustine Eguavoen to lead Nigeria to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The defender, who returned to the national team after being left out under former coach Finidi George, played a key role in Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in their AFCON qualifier on Saturday.
Troost-Ekong expressed his satisfaction with Eguavoen’s coaching following the comprehensive win, highlighting the interim coach’s connection with the team and his tactical abilities.
The Super Eagles captain noted, “We respect Benin, the last time we played against them, they won the game. But we have great belief in our team and our coach, who is like a family member who has come back to us.”

Reflecting on the match, Troost-Ekong emphasized the importance of their attacking strength and defensive discipline. “With the attacking talent we have, if we play very well and keep the door shut at the back, we will create chances and score. Today was a good indication of the direction we are heading,” he said, adding that the win is just the first step in Nigeria’s journey to qualify for AFCON 2025.
Eguavoen, who previously led Nigeria during the 2021 AFCON in 2023, was appointed interim coach after the Nigeria Football Federation struggled to find a permanent replacement. Despite the temporary nature of his role, Troost-Ekong has shown full support for Eguavoen’s leadership.
As the Super Eagles prepare for their next qualifier against Rwanda, they will aim to build on the momentum of their victory and secure six points from their opening two matches, solidifying their path to AFCON 2025.
