THE ATHLETICNG has scooped part of what Finidi George wrote in his resignation letter as head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The announcement of Finidi’s resignation came on Saturday, June 15. Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen’s public criticism of Finidi, who reportedly questioned Osimhen’s commitment to the national team added further stir to the complicated situation.
In his letter, Finidi explained that his resignation was prompted by the Nigerian Football Federation’s (NFF) decision to appoint a foreign Technical Adviser. Finidi had been at the helm during Nigeria’s recent 2-1 loss to Benin and a 1-1 draw with South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“While the recent qualifying results haven’t been ideal, I remained committed to guiding our World Cup qualification campaign back on course. Given the recent changes to the technical crew, I believe it’s time for me to step aside,” the Finidi George wrote.
He continued, “I am writing to inform you of my decision to step down as head coach of the Super Eagles. This decision is made in light of the recent changes to the team’s technical staff. Please be assured of my unwavering support for the team and I wish us all the best in the future.”
Nigeria is currently ranked fifth in the six-team Group C standings for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin lead the group with seven points each, separated by goal difference, while the 2013 African champions have accumulated three points from four matches.
