Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped eight spots in the latest FIFA rankings, slipping from 30th to 38th spot in the world.
Despite a recent defeat to Benin Republic and the slip, Nigeria’s Super Eagles still lead many of their African rivals in the latest FIFA rankings.
Released by FIFA on June 20, 2024, the rankings show Nigeria dropping eight places from 30th to 38th in the world.
This drop is the second consecutive decline for the Super Eagles, following a two-place drop in April. The latest slip comes after disappointing performances in the World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria managed a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo and then suffered a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic. These results have jeopardized their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Despite the drop, the Super Eagles remain fifth in Africa. The top four African teams in the rankings are Morocco (12th in the world), Senegal (18th), Egypt (36th), and Cote d’Ivoire (37th). Nigeria still comfortably leads their main qualifying group rival, South Africa, who are ranked 59th globally and 10th in Africa. The Super Eagles also rank higher than Cameroon (49th) and Ghana (64th).
In the global context, Nigeria is ahead of countries like Scotland, Chile, and Norway, home to star striker Erling Haaland. At the top of the rankings, Argentina maintains the number one spot, followed by France, Belgium, Brazil, and England rounding out the top five.
As the Super Eagles prepare for upcoming matches, they aim to improve their performances and climb back up the rankings. The team’s fans and management remain hopeful for a strong showing in future fixtures to secure their place in the 2026 World Cup.
