Super Eagles-eligible Chelsea winger set to join Newcastle United in ₦59 billion deal

Super Eagles-eligible Chelsea winger Chukwunonso Madueke is on the verge of leaving the London giants to join Newcastle United in a deal worth over ₦59 billion, according to reports.

Madueke, who arrived at Chelsea in January 2023 from PSV Eindhoven, has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at the club, making just 17 starts in 29 appearances last season. With the emergence of Cole Palmer, Madueke’s playing time is unlikely to increase, prompting him to seek a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle United, managed by Eddie Howe, are keen to sign the 23-year-old winger, who has already agreed to a deal with the club. The Magpies are expected to match the £29 million (₦59.6 billion) that Chelsea paid to sign Madueke from PSV last year.

Madueke’s decision to join Newcastle United may also be influenced by his international prospects. Born in London to Nigerian parents, Madueke is eligible to represent Nigeria, and a move to Newcastle could increase his chances of featuring for the Super Eagles. With AC Milan’s Samuel Chukwueze currently occupying the right-wing position, Madueke may find it easier to break into the Nigeria squad.

The winger has already represented England at various youth levels, including the U21 team that won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship last year. However, with Cole Palmer’s rise to prominence, Madueke’s path to the England senior team appears increasingly complicated.

Madueke’s departure from Chelsea will leave a void in the Blues’ attack, but the club is expected to reinforce their squad in the transfer market. Newcastle United, on the other hand, will be eager to integrate Madueke into their team and capitalize on his pace and skill on the wing.

The deal is subject to completion, but Madueke’s move to Newcastle United is expected to be finalized soon. The winger is currently with Chelsea on their pre-season tour of the USA and featured in their 2-2 draw with Wrexham on Thursday.
