Janne Andersson has confirmed that he is in talks with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) about becoming the next head coach of the Super Eagles. However, he emphasized that no agreement has been reached yet.
Andersson, 61, is currently a free agent after stepping down as Sweden’s coach in November 2023, following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2024 European Championship.
The Super Eagles are currently without a permanent coach after Finidi George resigned following Nigeria’s disappointing performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin. Before his resignation, the NFF had already decided to hire a foreign Technical Adviser to lead the team through the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers and the remaining World Cup qualifying matches.
Earlier this week, the NFF clarified that Andersson has not yet been appointed as the Super Eagles’ new coach.
Speaking to the Swedish newspaper Expressen, Andersson said, “It’s a huge footballing nation. I can confirm that I have had a dialogue with the Nigeria Football Federation. It’s a huge footballing nation, so I’m extremely flattered to be in the running to be their next national team coach.”
He added, “Dialogue is ongoing, and I don’t really want to say more than that. I have been in this industry for so long and know that things can happen in different ways. So we’ll see what happens in the future.”
Janne Andersson, who was a forward during his playing career, has previously managed Swedish clubs Halmstads BK, Örgryte IS, and IFK Norrköping, but has never coached a team outside of Sweden.
