Odunayo Adekuoroye went into the Paris 2024 Olympics as one of Nigeria’s medal hopefuls but that dream suffered setback on Thursday, August 8.

Odunayo Adekuoroye’s bid for a medal in women’s freestyle wrestling at the Paris 2024 Olympics ended in disappointment as she was narrowly defeated by China’s Kexin Hong in the 57kg quarterfinal.

Rated World No. 3, Adekuoroye had previously showcased her prowess by defeating Chaimaa Aouiss of Algeria in the Round of 16, securing a Victory by Injury.

However, her quarterfinal match was a close contest, ultimately losing by a narrow margin of 8-10 points (Pin Fall).

The defeat is particularly painful for Odunayo Adekuoroye, a three-time Commonwealth Champion, who had high hopes of securing an Olympic medal. Despite the loss, there remains a glimmer of hope for her to compete for a bronze medal. If Kexin Hong advances to the final, Adekuoroye will have the opportunity to fight for bronze through the repechage rounds.
