Trabzonspor launch €6m bid for Super Eagles striker

Turkish Süper Lig side Trabzonspor Kulübü has made a €6m bid for Super Eagles and Southampton striker Paul Ebere Onuachu. The 30-year-old striker spent the 2023/2024 season on loan with Trabzonspor, scoring 17 goals in 25 games across all competitions.

Onuachu is keen on continuing his career with Abdullah Mucib Avcı’s team, but Southampton is holding out for a higher price.

The Saints splashed €18m to bring Onuachu to England and are looking to recoup at least half of that amount. Trabzonspor President Ertuğrul Doğan is eager to keep the Nigerian striker, but the clubs are far apart in their valuation.

According to Turkish outlet Karadeniz Gazete, Trabzonspor has offered €6m (₦10.6billion) for the ex-FC Ebedei striker, and is waiting for Southampton’s response. The Turkish side has also offered to send a player on loan to Goztepe as part of the deal. Both Goztepe and Southampton are owned by the Sport Republic group.

Southampton may be forced to accept Trabzonspor’s offer if they don’t want an unhappy player at the club. Onuachu is not in their plans for the 2024/2025 season, and the club may need to sell him to avoid a stalemate.

The summer transfer window in the English Premier League ends on August 30, while it ends two weeks later in Turkey.

His impressive performance for Trabzonspor last season has made him a valuable asset for the Turkish side. The outcome of this transfer saga will be closely watched by football fans in Nigeria and beyond.

The transfer window will remain open till the last day of this month with clubs poised to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
