Troost-Ekong, Aina set to resume training as Serie A eases coronavirus lockdown

Super Eagles duo of Olaoluwa Aina and William Troost-Ekong are set to resume football after Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte announced first steps in lifting the country’s coronavirus lockdown.

The Italian government hopes that Serie A fixtures could resume between May 27 and June 2 – with the season finishing in early August.

Conte said in a televised address that players would be able “to undertake training individually from May 4 in groups and then we’ll evaluate if there are conditions to allow the season to be completed”.

The Italian Football Federation, FIGC, also intends to begin testing of players for the coronavirus at the start of May to allow for a safe return to training and has already drawn up a medical plan.

For the start of training, each club will form a group of players, technical staff, doctors and physiotherapists who will be tested and then isolated in a summer-style training camp.

There are also plans to donate five COVID-19 test kits each to be used by clubs to avoid criticism that football is taking much-needed resources from other areas.

Serie A was suspended on March 9 with high profile players tested positive for the virus. The league has insisted it is committed to finishing the season.

The FIGC said on Thursday it would push back the formal end of the season from June 30 to August 2, to allow time for remaining games to be completed.

There are 12 full rounds and four outstanding fixtures still to play, with William Troost-Ekong who plays for Udinese and Ola Aina’s Torino sitting 14th and 15th respectively, with one point separating both teams, while Juventus are top with just a point ahead of second-placed Lazio.

Italy has so far recorded 199,414 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with 26,977 deaths and 66,624 recoveries.
