Vandrezzer FC begin the 2023 Nigeria National League season with an emphatic 3-1 win over Go Round FC on Wednesday at the Krisdera Stadium, Umoku.

First-half goals from Olalekan Abdulsalam (6) and Bassey Odiong (38) put the Lions of Naija on the driving seat before the break and midfielder Isaac Saviour made sure the game was beyond their host with the third goal in the 55th minute.

Go Round FC made the scoreline a little respectable with a goal late in the closing stages of the game.

Ivorian Coach Niambele Mohammed needed a response from his team following last week’s disappointing defeat to rival FC ONE Rocket in the Akwa Ibom State/SMEsportz FA Cup and Lekan responded with a worldie from just after the centre circle inside the opening 10 minutes to continue his impressive run of form for the Lions of Naija.

Centre-back Odiong was left unmarked in the box to tap in a Saviour Isaac freekick in the 33rd minute to give the Akwa Ibom side a two-goal cushion heading into half-time.

Uncharastically, Odiong who looked in great form game drove past his markers to square the ball to Isaac to score the third of the afternoon for the visitors within nine minutes of the restart to put the game to bed.

Chukwunweike reduced the deficit for the home side in the 86th minute.

Not much has changed from the Lions team that finished in 6th last season and Coach Niambele named a familiar starting XI with Obinna Akuchie in goal, Bassey Odiong, Owolabi Ibrahim, Samuel Edoho and Oloye Felix in defense while in midfield, Fawaz Otun and Saviour Isaac started alongside new signing Mubarak Trimisiyi while Lekan Abdulsalam and Gideon Monday formed the attack alongside new boy Kone Ibrahim.

The win takes Vandrezzer FC to the top of Group B1 of the Southern Conference and is the first victory for new head coach, Niambele Mohammed who has struggled for victory and performance from his team in the pre-season while Go Round FC are rooted to the bottom of the table.

Up next will be a local derby against FC ONE Rockets on Sunday, March 26, 2023 at the Eket Sports Stadium in Eket.
